Noteworthy Publications  (My 'Selected Publications' list, an evolving list of the publications I most value)
In press Kelly KM, Bardach J. Biological basis of cleft palate and palatal surgery. In: FJM Verstraete, M Lommer (eds.), Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Dogs and Cats. St. Louis: Mosby. Surgical studies using dogs have been the basis for understanding and improving the techniques of cleft palatal repair. This chapter draws from my experiences and hopefully will in some small way contribute to information about the surgical care of these animals.
2006 Thorne PS, Adamcakova-Dodd A, Kelly KM, O'Neill ME, Duchaine C. Metal working fluid with mycobacteria and endotoxin Induces hypersensitivity pneumonitis in mice. American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, 173:759-768. An image from our study was chosen for the cover.  That was pretty cool. Our paper made the cover! Thorne et al. 2006
2003 Littlefield TR, Kelly KM, Pomatto JK, Cherney, JC. Infant car seats, carriers, bouncy seats and swings: Their role in deformational plagiocephaly. Journal of Prosthetics and Orthototics. 15: 102-106. A timely article published the same month as the American Academy of Pediatrics statement on Prevention and Management of Positional Skull Deformities in Infants which, among other issues, acknowledged the positional plagiocephaly epidemic and cautioned against leaving infants for extended periods in car seats and carriers.
2002 Kelly KM. Population. In: JP Hart and JE Terrell (eds.) Darwin and Archaeology: A Handbook of Key Concepts. Greenwood Publishers: Westport, Connecticut, pp. 243-256. A great volume (I believe a landmark volume) with which I am happy to have been involved. Darwin & Archaeology edited by Hart and Terrell
2001 Terrell JE, Kelly KM, Rainbird P. Foregone conclusions? In search of 'Austronesians' and 'Papuans.' Current Anthropology. 42: 97-124. You be the judge. Read the comments. Did we identify a problem?
2000 Littlefield TR, Pomatto JK, Kelly, KM. Dynamic Orthotic Cranioplasty: Treatment of the older infant. Report of four cases. Neurosurgical Focus 9 (3): Article 5. This invited electronic publication was a major step in spreading the word that positional (deformational) plagiocephaly can be treated after 12 months of age.
1999 Kelly KM, Littlefield TR, Pomatto JK, Manwarring KH, Beals SP. Cranial growth unrestricted during treatment of deformational plagiocephaly. Pediatric Neurosurgery, 30: 193-199. Conducted in response to a formal FDA inquiry, this study demonstrated that deformational plagiocephaly can be treated without restricting circumferential growth.
1999 Kelly KM, Littlefield TR, Pomatto JK, Ripley CE, Beals SP, Joganic EF. Importance of early recognition and treatment of deformational plagiocephaly with orthotic cranioplasty. American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal, 36: 127-30. Responding to the 'wait and see' attitude of many healthcare providers, this article demonstrated that earlier intervention achieves better correction.
1999 Littlefield TR, Kelly KM, Pomatto JK, Beals SP. Multiple-birth infants at higher risk for development of deformational plagiocephaly. Pediatrics, 103: 565-69. One of ten articles cited in the 2003 American Academy of Pediatrics statement on Prevention and Management of Positional Skull Deformities in Infants.
1997 Merchant JA, Kelly KM, McMillan D, Troester S, Walkner L, et al. The 1997 Iowa Health Fact Book. Iowa City, IA: University of Iowa, 296 pp. The inaugural volume of a now biennial publication containing epidemiological information about health in Iowa. Click here to see the current version online. The 1997 Iowa Health Fact Book
1996 Kelly KM. The end of the trail: the genetic bases for deriving the Polynesian peoples from Austronesian-speaking paleopopulations of Melanesian Near Oceania. In: J Davidson, G Irwin, BF Leach, A Pawley and D Brown (eds.), Oceanic Culture History, Essays in Honour of Roger Green. New Zealand Journal of Archaeology Special Publication, pp. 355-364. Foremost, it was an honor to honour Roger Green. In addition, the article questioned the bases for several long held beliefs about the colonization of Polynesia.
1994 Kelly KM. On the magic number 500: an expostulation. Current Anthropology 35:435-438. Based on my Master's paper (1980), this article is a repudiation of the mathematical basis for population equilibrium among hunting/gathering populations (i.e., Joseph Birdsell 1954).
1994 Salyer KE, Bardach J, Squier CA, Kelly, KM. A comparative study of the effects of biodegradable and titanium plating systems on cranial growth and structure: experimental study in beagles. Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. 93:705-13. One of the first in vivo studies of biodegradable plates, now a mainstay in craniofacial surgery.
1993 Clark JT, Kelly KM. Human genetics, paleoenvironments, and malaria: relationships and implications for the settlement of Oceania. American Anthropologist 95:613-631. Along with Kelly (1990), this article is cited in the 'History of Physical Anthropology: An Encyclopedia' (1996) [Frank Spencer, Ed.]. History of Physical Anthropology edited by Frank Spencer
1992 Bardach J, Morris HL, Olin WH, Gray SD, Jones DL, Kelly KM, Shaw WC, Semb, G. Results of multidisciplinary management of bilateral cleft lip and palate at the Iowa Cleft Palate Center. Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery 89:419-432. This follow-up treatment study is notable for having ended use of certain treatment procedures whose iatrogenic effects had not been previously recognized.
1990 Kelly KM. Gm polymorphisms, linguistic affinities, and natural selection in Melanesia. Current Anthropology 31:201-219. This article (derived from my dissertation) along with Clark & Kelly (1993) is cited and discussed by WW Howells in the 'History of Physical Anthropology: An Encyclopedia' (1996) [Frank Spencer, Ed.].
1988 Bardach J, Kelly, KM, Jakobsen JR. Simultaneous cleft lip and palate repair: an experimental study in beagles. Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery 82:31-39. The first in a series of landmark experimental surgical studies conducted and co-authored with the late, distinguished plastic surgeon, Janusz Bardach.  This article introduced multivariate methods to our methodology.
1985 Bardach J, Martin RK, Mooney MP, Kelly, KM, Albright J (1985) Bone formation in the canine palate following partial resection. Progress in Clinical and Biological Research 187: 365-37. My first publication--not what I hoped and planned, but my first publication nonetheless.
