Noteworthy Publications & Products
(My 'Selected Publications' list, an evolving list of the publications I most value)
2003 Littlefield TR, Kelly KM, Pomatto JK, Cherney JC. Infant car seats, carriers, bouncy seats and swings: Their role in deformational plagiocephaly. Journal of Prosthetics and Orthotics. 15: 102-106.  Notable because appeared in the same month and year as the American Academy of Pediatrics statement on Prevention and Management of Positional Skull Deformities in Infants, which, like our article--in addition to acknowledging the benefits of using cranial orthoses for correcting skull deformities--recommended limiting time in car seats and other seating devices for prevention for correction of skull deformities.
2002 Kelly KM. Population. In: JP Hart and JE Terrell (eds.) Darwin and Archaeology: A Handbook of Key Concepts. Greenwood Publishers: Westport, Connecticut, pp. 243-256. A great volume (I believe a landmark volume) with which I am happy to have been involved. Darwin & Archaeology edited by Hart and Terrell
2001 Terrell JE, Kelly KM, Rainbird P. Foregone conclusions? In search of 'Austronesians' and 'Papuans.' Current Anthropology. 42: 97-124. You be the judge. Read the comments. Did we identify a problem?
1999 Kelly KM, Littlefield TR, Pomatto JK, Manwarring KH, Beals SP. Cranial growth unrestricted during treatment of deformational plagiocephaly. Pediatric Neurosurgery, 30: 193-199. Conducted in response to a formal FDA inquiry, this study demonstrated that deformational plagiocephaly can be treated without restricting circumferential growth.
1999 Kelly KM, Littlefield TR, Pomatto JK, Ripley CE, Beals SP, Joganic EF. Importance of early recognition and treatment of deformational plagiocephaly with orthotic cranioplasty. American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal, 36: 127-30. Responding to the 'wait and see' attitude of many healthcare providers, this article demonstrated that earlier intervention achieves better correction.
1999 Littlefield TR, Kelly KM, Pomatto JK, Beals SP. Multiple-birth infants at higher risk for development of deformational plagiocephaly. Pediatrics, 103: 565-69. One of ten articles cited in the 2003 American Academy of Pediatrics statement on Prevention and Management of Positional Skull Deformities in Infants.
1996 Kelly KM. The end of the trail: the genetic bases for deriving the Polynesian peoples from Austronesian-speaking paleopopulations of Melanesian Near Oceania. In: J Davidson, G Irwin, BF Leach, A Pawley and D Brown (eds.), Oceanic Culture History, Essays in Honour of Roger Green. New Zealand Journal of Archaeology Special Publication, pp. 355-364. Foremost, it was an honor to honour Roger Green. In addition, the article questioned the bases for several long held beliefs about the colonization of Polynesia.
1994 Kelly KM. On the magic number 500: an expostulation. Current Anthropology 35:435-438. Based on my Master's paper (1980), this article is a reassessment of the mathematical basis for population equilibrium among hunting/gathering populations (i.e., Joseph Birdsell 1954).
1993 Clark JT, Kelly KM. Human genetics, paleoenvironments, and malaria: relationships and implications for the settlement of Oceania. American Anthropologist 95:613-631. Along with Kelly (1990), this article is cited in the 'History of Physical Anthropology: An Encyclopedia' (1996) [Frank Spencer, Ed.]. History of Physical Anthropology edited by Frank Spencer
1990 Kelly KM. Gm polymorphisms, linguistic affinities, and natural selection in Melanesia. Current Anthropology 31:201-219. This article (derived from my dissertation) along with Clark & Kelly (1993) is cited and discussed by WW Howells in the 'History of Physical Anthropology: An Encyclopedia' (1996) [Frank Spencer, Ed.].
